What Are We Interested in Learning?

On Sunday Morning, April 3, the Adult Education Committee will hold a discussion at 9:15 am on what we are interested in learning.  For the last 9 months we have been focused on writings from authors connected with the Jesus Seminar.  There are many other areas in which we might chose to go when this series is completed.

There is the whole area of Christian ethics which include a large range of topics from bio-ethics, ethics in human rights, the development of personal ethics growing out of our involvement with scriptures and the life of the church.  There are issues in spiritual growth.  There are many paths to spiritual growth and as we completed our Lenten Series on Spiritual Journeys we realize how important our Christians values can be to the way in which we live our lives.  It is also clear that there are many different ways to journey in the Christian faith.  There is also the area of our personal spiritual practices.  There is the old saying “practice what you preach” and yet we don’t often compare notes as to the variety of spiritual practices in our church family.

There are also issues in community building.  One of the statements that we hear often is how important a sense of community is in the lives of our members.  Yet rarely do we talk about how we build communities in our own live.

There are numerous issues having to do with health.  The whole drama playing out in Florida about how do we decide the limits on life support gives opportunities for many points of view.  The matter of dying is another topic always present for all of us as we face our own mortality in a variety of ways.

Come join us on the first Sunday in April to express your concerns, your needs and your wishes.  Our discussion will not be limited to our Sunday morning class but will deal with the larger issue of what we want to explore.  If you want to come but need childcare, please let the church office know and childcare will be provided.

Program on the Middle East

There will be a program on the Middle East, especially concerning the issues involving the Israelis and Palestinians on Thursday night, April 7 at the First Methodist Church.  There will be a panel and small group interaction and we will have the opportunity to learn some of the ways we can be involved in peace making efforts in this region.  The program will begin at 7 pm.  Call John Simmons at 823-6517 for more information and watch in the church bulletin for more details.

Adult Ed Class on Spong Continues

The current Adult Class on John Shelby Spong’s book, Liberating the Gospels: Reading the Bible with Jewish Eyes will meet again on April 10 & 17 at 9:15 am in the Fireside Room.  Please join us for the discussion on April 3 and the conclusion of the current class on April 10 and 17.
