Sunday Morning Class

When Jesus Came to Harvard

Making Moral Choices Today

This book, by Harvey Cox, will be the basis of the new study of the Sunday Morning Adult Education Class.  “The highly readable text, filled with wisdom and wit, is a timely rebuke to those who would do with Jesus whatever they will.”

The first meeting of the class will be Sunday morning, June 1 in the Fireside Room at 9:15.  If you need childcare, please call the church office at 823-2484 to make arrangements.  Nancy Mathews and John Simmons will co-facilitate the first session and organize the rest of the class meetings.

When Jesus Came to Harvard is not another look at the historical Jesus, but it considers Jesus’ contemporary significance by concentrating on the stories he told and those stories told about him.  For youth and adults, Christians and non-Christians, When Jesus Came to Harvard is urgently relevant.

The book will be available in the church office by May 25 at a cost of $17.  Checks are made payable to The Community Church of Sebastopol with a note in the memo line: Adult Ed Book.  Try to read or skim chapters 1-3 before the 1st session.

Each session will be complete in itself and people can come for all or for whatever Sundays work out for them.  The class will continue through July.

The basis for the class is perhaps found in the author’s closing paragraph of his first chapter:

“It is not impossible to bridge the gap between Jesus and ourselves.  The secret lies in covering the link between [Jesus] the rabbinic storyteller on the one hand and our own imaginations on the other.  Taken together, these two elements can still make [Jesus] our contemporary and jog the slumbering moral conscience of our times.”

Come join us on our journey.
