Talent plus dedication, plus warmth equal Lud and Glenda Elvy! All of these qualities have been shared with our congregation since 1971. An Analy graduate, Lud was born in Sebastopol, served in the Navy and took his teacher training at San Jose State for industrial arts. He taught one year before marrying Glenda; they started out in Lodi, California. After three years he transferred to San Rafael where he taught for twenty-four years, retiring in 1984. In 1971 the family, now including Walter, Joanna (Caldwell), David and Karen, moved to Sebastopol and joined our congregation. They now have five grandchildren, including Kevin-Derrick Caldwell. Born in Southern California, Glenda moved to Dunsmuir as a teenager. She enrolled at San Jose State, met Lud at a folk dance and left school to marry him. A piano student since age ten, Glenda began accompanying lodge and club groups while still in high school. Once in PTA, her talent was in demand to play for class programs. She taught and played in the Sunday School and took over the Youth Choir. Glenda continued this music ministry at the Community Church until 2002. Many of her programs were an hour long, and even primary children sang all the way through by memory. Glenda has played for private voice teachers, the Analy High School Choir, and in venues from Cam Caz to the McDonald Mansion in Santa Rosa. Once, when Verna Tischer was organist, the power went out, silencing the organ during worship; Glenda jumped to the piano and the hymn was finished without a gap. Glenda fills in (hopefully in less stressful situations!) often and beautifully The Elvy’s provided leadership in our camping program, from Lud’s running the crafts program while Glenda did registration and music, to the unique name tags Lud still provides for Family Camp. Lud has served on the Board of Trustees and Peace & Justice, as well as contributing hundreds of hours of painting on the church property and a variety of other handyman tasks. Glenda is an officer in Women’s Fellowship, serves on the Peace & Justice and Mission & Outreach Committees and always finds time to make phone calls for a member in need of rides or meals. Besides Glenda’s private students and Lud’s woodworking, they both enjoy puzzles – his wood; and hers –words. My word for the both of them is wonderful! |
