A Book
for Our Time: Gilead
by Marilynne Robinson You may have noticed, on page A16 of the August/September issue of United Church News, a review of Marilynne Robinson's fine book, "Gilead." "A good sermon," Marilynne Robinson writes, "is one side of a passionate conversation." The reviewer, David Anderson, comments: "It has to be heard in that way. So, too, a good novel. It is a conversation between the novelist, the reader, and - as in the case of a sermon, perhaps, for some - God." I'll post David Anderson's review in the church library, where you will find a copy of "Gilead" prominently displayed. If there is sufficient demand, I'll order a second copy for the library. You may want to get a copy of your own, as this is a book to be savored and cherished. It would make a wonderful gift. I haven't talked to anyone who doesn't love this book. A winner of the Pulitzer Prize, and one of the best books I've read this year. David Anderson calls "Gilead" a "profound, prayerful meditation on, and a joyous thanksgiving for, life in 'ordinary time', the sacramental character of physical, everyday existence as well as the gift of physical particularity and how blessing and sacrament are mediated through it."
