New Adult Mission Trip

New Orleans Work Group - Next Planning Meeting March 4

Sunday, July 15-Saturday, July 21, 2007

Cost; $750 – approximately (plus an “n95 respirator”)

Would you like to join the Community Church work group going to New Orleans to help with Hurricane Recovery as part of the UCC disaster response and recovery ministry?

We will fly to New Orleans on Sunday and rent a van.  We will be staying at St. Paul’s UCC Church, sleeping on cots and/or twin size bunk beds with air bed mattresses.  You need to bring twin sheets or sleeping bag and pillow and a n95 respirator which costs about $45.  As a group we will prepare our own meals.  Laundry facilities are on site.  We will work Monday through Friday with Wednesday afternoon off.  Several options of tours will be available for Wednesday afternoon.

Both skilled and unskilled workers are welcome.   You must be able to work in a hot, humid, buggy environment and tolerate group living!  Participants must be at least 16 years of age.  “Flexibility and patience are key for the success of the experience” says the UCC website.  Further information visit www.ucc.org/ministries/volunteer/hurricane.htm

If this sounds interesting to you, pick up an application in the church office.  The application deadline is February 28.  $400 must be paid with the application and the balance is due by April 30.  (Some financial assistance may be available.)  The trip is being planned by those interested in going.

The next meeting of all participants will be held Sunday, March 4th after church in the Fireside room.  If you have questions, call Joyce Cox.

CHRISTMAS IN JULY

Thank you for participating in our Christmas in July campaign.  We collected socks, shorts, bus tickets, movie passes, shirts, towels, toiletry articles and more to deliver to the Homeless Services Center in Santa Rosa.  The items were very much needed and the center appreciated the summer delivery - one of their busiest times of the year!

Valley of the Moon Activity

On July 21st, twenty-five children and counselors were treated to a hot dog and watermelon picnic at Armstrong Woods.  It was the beginning of our real hot spell and the redwoods were a perfect place to hang out in the shade.

After lunch, the group was met by two docents from the Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods.  They took the group on a hike through the grove and stopped to show us interesting trees, facts about the grove and where the bats live during the day.  The children were energetic and really enjoyed the outing.

Thanks to Mary McMillon, Dave and Suzanne White and Jim Dempsey for all the help on the 21st.

Recycle Ink Jet & Laser Cartridges

Recycle your inkjet and laser cartridges at church!  Mission & Outreach is now collecting your empty cartridges to help support Habitat for Humanity and their local build in Sebastopol this summer.  Bring your empty inkjet and laser cartridges to the church office and help Mission & Outreach recycle and raise funds at the same time! In just over one year we raised $900 for SOL just by collecting empty cartridges – let’s top that as we collect for the Sonoma County Habitat for Humanity.

Shoebox Ministry & Mitten & Hat Tree

Thank you for your support for he Mission & Outreach  Hat, Socks & Scarves Tree and the Shoebox Ministry.  We delivered 192 individual items and 77 shoeboxes!

SEE’S Candy Sales to benefit

Habitat for Humanity

Due to the success of previous candy sales, Mission & Outreach will be selling See’s Candy for Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Easter.  All proceeds will go to support the Community Church’s commitment of $5000 to the local Habitat for Humanity building projects.  In December we will have 1 pound boxes, gift certificates and novelty boxes for sale after church.  Sale dates will be announced in future newsletters.

Habitat has recently announced construction schedules updates.  The two homes on Litchfield are now planned for construction in summer or fall of 2007 and the two homes on Johnson Street are expected to begin in Spring 2007.  The permit process and weather are, as always, the variables for these projects.

School Supplies for Local Students in Need

Thank you for participating in our drive for school supplies for Lincoln School! We collected tons of crayons, binders, pens, pens, scissors and more  for the students, all thanks to your efforts.  You get an A+ for your efforts!
