Our own Rosemary Manchester hosts a monthly radio program on KRCB called A Novel Idea and on May 10 her program will feature the book Saints and Villains by author Denise Giardina.
Rosemary tells us, “I'm doing a Bonhoeffer program on my radio show on KRCB, the local public radio station, found on your FM dial at 90.9 and 91.1. I do a monthly show called A Novel Idea on the second Wednesday of each month at 7 in the evening. On May 10 we will air a special program, based on the book Saints and Villains by Denise Giardina. I have just bought several copies of the book for the church library. It is a fictionalized biography of Bonhoeffer, beautifully done, incorporating many of the actual events in his life. The author is careful to let the reader know what she has left out, and when she has formed composite characters. I am absolutely in love with the book!”
Denise has woven a splendid novel based on the life and death of the great German theologian and ethicist Dietrich Bonhoeffer, using the Mozart Great Mass in C Minor as a framework for her book, Saints and Villains. Bonhoeffer is perhaps best known for his “Letters and Papers from Prison”, originally published as “Prisoner for God”, and for his earlier book, “The Cost of Discipleship.” He was imprisoned for his participation in the resistance plot against Hitler and executed by the Nazis on April 9, 1945. The name of Dietrich Bonhoeffer may not be as universally recognized as that of Mozart, but the manner in which their stories are entwined is sure to deepen your appreciation for his intellect and his life of quiet heroism.
