School Supplies for Local Students in Need

Several of our church members are teachers at Lincoln school in Santa Rosa and the Mission & Outreach Committee is recommending that we adopt these children for our fall outreach campaign.  Our original plan was to collect backpacks, but that need has already been met – but there is still a great need for school supplies, supplies that these children are not financially able to buy without our help.

The following is a list of items the students need and we hope you can help us provide.  Items can be left in the large box in the church entryway.  Thanks in advance for your support!

16 or 24 Pack of Crayons                            Pencils

Glue Sticks                                                Erasers of any kind

Colored Pencils                                          Waterless Markers

Paper Towels                                              Kleenex tissues

1 1/2 inch size 3-Ring Binders

Shoebox Ministry & Mitten & Hat Tree

The Mission & Outreach Board is once again sponsoring the Hat, Socks & Scarves Tree as well as the Shoebox Ministry.  Warm socks, scarves, warm hats and gloves can be brought in to decorate the Christmas tree that will be placed in the narthex on the first Sunday of Advent, December 3rd.  There is always a tremendous need for children’s socks, and although we may not want to decorate the tree with them, new packaged underwear in all sizes is also an item in great demand.

Shoeboxes will be available for you to pick up on December 3rd following worship.  The shoeboxes can be filled with necessities for a homeless man, woman or child (see suggestion list below).  The box should be wrapped in Christmas paper and labeled as to “Man”, “Woman” or “Child” and placed under the Christmas tree in the narthex.  The week of December 17th members of the Mission & Outreach Board will deliver the gifts to the Homeless Services Center in Santa Rosa and the Living Room, serving homeless women and children.

Our Shoebox Ministry gifts can be an important part in the life of a homeless person.  Please fill your shoebox generously using “regular” size products (not “sample” sizes).

SEE’S Candy Sales to benefit

Habitat for Humanity

Due to the success of previous candy sales, Mission & Outreach will be selling See’s Candy for Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Easter.  All proceeds will go to support the Community Church’s commitment of $5000 to the local Habitat for Humanity building projects.  In December we will have 1 pound boxes, gift certificates and novelty boxes for sale after church.  Sale dates will be announced in future newsletters.

Habitat has recently announced construction schedules updates.  The two homes on Litchfield are now planned for construction in summer or fall of 2007 and the two homes on Johnson Street are expected to begin in Spring 2007.  The permit process and weather are, as always, the variables for these projects.

CHRISTMAS IN JULY

Thank you for participating in our Christmas in July campaign.  We collected socks, shorts, bus tickets, movie passes, shirts, towels, toiletry articles and more to deliver to the Homeless Services Center in Santa Rosa.  The items were very much needed and the center appreciated the summer delivery - one of their busiest times of the year!

Valley of the Moon Activity

On July 21st, twenty-five children and counselors were treated to a hot dog and watermelon picnic at Armstrong Woods.  It was the beginning of our real hot spell and the redwoods were a perfect place to hang out in the shade.

After lunch, the group was met by two docents from the Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods.  They took the group on a hike through the grove and stopped to show us interesting trees, facts about the grove and where the bats live during the day.  The children were energetic and really enjoyed the outing.

Thanks to Mary McMillon, Dave and Suzanne White and Jim Dempsey for all the help on the 21st.

Recycle Ink Jet & Laser Cartridges

Recycle your inkjet and laser cartridges at church!  Mission & Outreach is now collecting your empty cartridges to help support Habitat for Humanity and their local build in Sebastopol this summer.  Bring your empty inkjet and laser cartridges to the church office and help Mission & Outreach recycle and raise funds at the same time! In just over one year we raised $900 for SOL just by collecting empty cartridges – let’s top that as we collect for the Sonoma County Habitat for Humanity.
