Shoebox Ministry & Mitten & Hat TreeThank you for your support of the Mission & Outreach Hat, Socks & Scarves Tree and the Shoebox Ministry. 192 warm socks, scarves, warm hats and gloves and 77 Shoeboxes were delivered to the Homeless Services Center! Mission & Outreach invites you to a meeting on Sunday, January 21 following worship to see if there is interest in a Disaster Recovery Work Group to travel to help with the continuing recovery efforts. UCC has three disaster recovery locations for work groups: Florida, New Orleans and Biloxi, Mississippi. Join us after church if you are interested in participating (minimum age is 15 for Florida and 16 for the other 2 locations). The dates of travel/work and location will be chosen by the group. You can read more about these work teams by visiting: www.ucc.org/ministries/volunteer/hurricane.htm If you are interested but are not able to attend the January meeting, contact Joyce Cox or Nancy Dempsey or leave a note in the Mission and Outreach box. SEE’S Candy Sales to benefitHabitat for HumanityDue to the success of previous candy sales, Mission & Outreach will be selling See’s Candy for Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Easter. All proceeds will go to support the Community Church’s commitment of $5000 to the local Habitat for Humanity building projects. In December we will have 1 pound boxes, gift certificates and novelty boxes for sale after church. Sale dates will be announced in future newsletters. Habitat has recently announced construction schedules updates. The two homes on Litchfield are now planned for construction in summer or fall of 2007 and the two homes on Johnson Street are expected to begin in Spring 2007. The permit process and weather are, as always, the variables for these projects. School Supplies for Local Students in Need
Thank you for participating in our Christmas in July campaign. We collected socks, shorts, bus tickets, movie passes, shirts, towels, toiletry articles and more to deliver to the Homeless Services Center in Santa Rosa. The items were very much needed and the center appreciated the summer delivery - one of their busiest times of the year! On July 21st, twenty-five children and counselors were treated to a hot dog and watermelon picnic at Armstrong Woods. It was the beginning of our real hot spell and the redwoods were a perfect place to hang out in the shade. After lunch, the group was met by two docents from the Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods. They took the group on a hike through the grove and stopped to show us interesting trees, facts about the grove and where the bats live during the day. The children were energetic and really enjoyed the outing. Thanks to Mary McMillon, Dave and Suzanne White and Jim Dempsey for all the help on the 21st. Recycle Ink Jet & Laser Cartridges Recycle your inkjet and laser cartridges at church! Mission & Outreach is now collecting your empty cartridges to help support Habitat for Humanity and their local build in Sebastopol this summer. Bring your empty inkjet and laser cartridges to the church office and help Mission & Outreach recycle and raise funds at the same time! In just over one year we raised $900 for SOL just by collecting empty cartridges – let’s top that as we collect for the Sonoma County Habitat for Humanity. |
