RALLY ROUND the ROOFS!
We have begun replacement of the “well past their prime”
roofs of the Church School wing and Fellowship Hall. The roofs had developed the
bad habit of trying to blow away in every storm and significant dry rot had
begun to appear in the beams underneath. This replacement also enables us to
install insulation under the roof which will provide significant savings on
utility bills. The Board of Trustees and Church Council determined that this
was work that could no longer wait. In fact, by the time you read this, the
work may be almost completed.
This is a large project, again a necessary project, and does not come cheap. Total final cost will be between $50,000 and $60,000. In order to pay for it, we have borrowed from ourselves, drawing on reserve upkeep funds and money available through other reserve funds. The goal is to pay ourselves back, and that is where each of you can play a part. The new roof is divided into squares with 50 shingles per square. We are inviting people to purchase a square for $600 per square. Some have already chosen to purchase more than one square! And in fact, we have already received pledges for 6 1/2 squares! If you cannot buy a square, then you are encouraged to buy shingles at $12 each. Tom Dilley, who has been overseeing this project, has built a model of the new roof and as squares are purchased, we will color in the roof – you will be able to monitor our progress each Sunday at church. Trustees, Gary Bachelor and Kathy Mayhew, are chairing this fundraising effort. Giving/pledge forms are available in the narthex and in the church office.
A new roof is not the world’s most exciting fund-raising opportunity, but for the future health of our church buildings – buildings which receive daily use from church or community groups – it is absolutely necessary. Please support this effort as we RALLY ROUND the ROOFS!
