The Powers That Be

Theology for a New Millennium

Adult Sunday Morning Class

Begins January 6

In our fast-paced secular world, God and theology are second-class citizens.  Money, politics, sports, and science seem better suited to the hard realities of our world.  One sad consequence of this shift is the loss of spiritual and theological bearings, most clearly evident in our inability to understand or speak about such things.  If the old way of viewing the universe no longer works, something else has to replace it.

The Powers That Be, by Walter Wink, reclaims the divine realm as central to human existence by offering new ways of understanding our world in theological terms.  Wink’s book is a challenge for Christians to wake up and become dangerously different….   the book also offers stunningly gracious comfort….

Join John Simmons Sunday mornings at 9:15 AM in the Fireside Room for an in-depth look at what Wink has to say about theology in a new millennium.  The class will meet January 6 through February 10.  The Powers That Be is available in the church office for $12.  Please make checks payable to the Community Church with a notation in the memo line “Adult Ed”.

Planning for 2008 Faith Journey & Soup Suppers

Each year during Lent, we gather at the church on Tuesday evenings to share in a simple soup supper and then hear one of our church members share his/her story and how faith has helped to shape that story.  Easter is March 23, 2008 and we will meet on the five Tuesday evenings during Lent beginning February 12.

The Adult Ed Committee sponsors this event and would like your help with the program.  Is there a person whose faith journey you recommend be on our program, someone who you think would like to share their story?  Would you like to share your faith journey this spring during Lent?  Please contact John Simmons if you have a name to add to the faith journey list.

In addition to planning the faith journey portion of the program, we are also looking to sign up soup makers for each Tuesday night.  We enjoy a variety of homemade soups for this event and if you would like to help, please contact John Simmons.

We meet in Fellowship Hall at 6:15 for the soup supper and then move to the Fireside Room at 7:00 for the faith journey.  Over the years, this has proven to be a meaningful experience for all who attend and a wonderful way to build community.  Your participation will make this event even more special.  Please contact John Simmons  if you would like to help.

Church Library News

The Adult Education Committee has been working towards cataloguing the church library – a big job and a process that Linda McBride has been helping with.  The books need to be removed from the shelves, scanned and then re-shelved in the correct location.

Maybe you have a few hours here and there to help with this project – times can be arranged to suit your schedule.  Please call Linda McBride or the church office if you can help.
