Adult Education
The Adult Education Committee has been working towards cataloguing the church library – a big job and a process that Linda McBride has been helping with. The books need to be removed from the shelves, scanned and then re-shelved in the correct location. Maybe you have a few hours here and there to help with this project – times can be arranged to suit your schedule. Please call Linda McBride or the church office if you can help.
Adult Education A New Fall Lineup at the Community Church
September 21 — Stories of the Bible: Truth in Metaphor 9:15 Sunday Mornings in the Fireside Room. A 6-week series reflecting on some of our best known Bible Stories (Jonah, Noah, Abraham & Isaac, Jacob’s Ladder, …) Each week we will tackle another story and ask why this story was so important it became holy scripture, what does it tell us about God, what truth is it trying to impart. Since each week is “self-contained”, you can come any time. We all have the book.
October 5 — The Breakfast Club: Faith in Action 8:15 Sunday Mornings -- Room 4 in the Education Wing. Kristen will lead a “seminar” discussion group on Faith in Action. The focus for October: the news of the day. Come for great discussion AND coffee, fruit, coffeecake/donuts (something!).
This is a NEW IDEA—a class before your other church responsibilities when many folks need to be front and center on Sunday. Give it a try!---for those who come and wonder what to do after class, well there’s nothing that says the class has to end at 9:15— and there is Gene’s class. Enjoy coffee, goodies and hanging out together.
Adult Ed Programs Continuing by Popular Demand:
Between Women – the first Saturday of the month starting October 4 at 8:45 AM in the Fireside Room.
Men’s Bible Class—Thursday mornings with Gene resuming on September 18 at 7:30 AM in the Fireside Room.
Women’s Bible Class – Wednesdays with our other Jean (Boal) starting on September 17 at 10 AM in the Fireside Room.
Previews of Coming Attractions: SAVE THE DATES: · November 1: The Sonoma County Rep Theater will present “Nixon” at the Community Church · November 15: Maria Jamoux will present “Dancing in the Spirit”—African dances done by children. Plans are underway for a Community Church Book Club, and Rosemary Manchester has volunteered to lead it. Scheduling is in process, and we will soon have an announcement for you. In the meantime, get your hands on a copy of "Three Cups of Tea", subtitled: "One Man's Mission to Promote Peace, One School at a Time" by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. This book, a true story, will be the selection for our first meeting. Here is what Tom Brokaw has to say about the book: "Thrilling . . . proof that one ordinary person, with the right combination of character and determination, really can change the world." We will also include some evening lectures and programs including an author’s series, music, and more exploration of spiritual living. The Adult Education Committee is also working to schedule an 8-week series led by Jim McAllister using the book by physicist and Anglican priest John Polkinghorne "Quarks, Chaos and Christianity", which asks serious questions of science and religion. He questions: Do we have to choose between these two powerful views or are they complimentary insights that give us a fuller picture than either on their own would provide? And there is even more to look forward to from Adult Ed – watch for announcements of a special Advent Retreat and a possible Comparative Religions Series coming later this year.
Sunday Adult Education Class Begins September 21
Literal truth or metaphorical truth? What do they say about God? What do they say about us? We will begin with Jonah and his fishing adventure. Any stories you would like to discuss? Let Gene know.
All adults are invited to join this Sunday morning class. There is no charge and no need to sign up. The class will run for six weeks, and you are welcome to attend some or all of the classes
