Book Discussion Groups

The Book Group brings readers together in an informal setting in which we can exchange ideas and insights.  Rosemary Manchester, who leads the group, chooses books that are well-written, encourage discussion, incorporate positive ideas and values, and are not excessively long.  Readers have a choice of evening or afternoon meetings.  The groups are open to everyone, and the books are available in the church office, as well as in the public library.  Come join us in the Fireside Room.  Here's what we are reading now:

Afternoon Group meets the first Tuesday of the month from 2 to 4 in the Fireside Room.

April 7Unbowed by Wangari Maathai.  A fine memoir by the indomitable Kenyan woman who won the Nobel Peace Prize for her tree-planting project.  Her book will capture your heart.

May 5The Life of Pi by Yann Martel.  A somewhat quirky work of fiction which lends itself to interpretation and discussion.  The young protagonist is the sole survivor when the ship sinks.  Or is he?  Like Job, he loses everything – or does he?  You get to decide.

June 2: Gilead by Marilynne Robinson (See description below)

The Evening Group meets the second Tuesday of the month from 7 to 8:30 in the Fireside Room.

April 14: Gilead by Marilynne Robinson.  The author is an ordained Congregational minister and one of the finest writers of our time.  This story is about three generations of ministers of a small church in a small town in Iowa.  It is also about love, pride, pain and loss, good and evil, and God's grace.  And the writer knows quite a lot about church suppers!

April 21 The Shack - a make up session with John Simmons.

May 12 The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd.  This book and the books listed above are available in the church office at discounted prices.
