Here's how Sue Monk Kidd, author of The Secret Life of Bees, describes March:
Set against the agonies of the Civil War, March is a richly imagined novel about the father in Louis May Alcott's Little Women. Geraldine Brooks tantalizes the reader with familiar flashes of the March family, while brilliantly weaving an entirely new story that is filled with the ache of love and marriage and with the power of war upon the mind and heart of one unforgettable man.
March is not a long book, perhaps you would find time to also re, or re-read, Little Women, to refresh yourself on the background story of March.
Here’s how it works:
1. You will need a library card. If you don’t already have one, you can get one at any branch of the Sonoma County Library. There is no charge.
2. Go to the Reference Desk of the Sebastopol Library and identify yourself as a member of the Community Church Book Group. The Reference Librarian will give you the book.
3. Go to the Circulation Desk and check out the book. You will be able to keep the book for 30 days and even renew it if necessary. You can renew by email or telephone.
Please sign up to be on the Book Group notification list – you will be notified what the book selection is for each month. The book titles will also be posted in the church newsletter and the Sunday bulletin. The books are selected from titles available to book groups from the Sonoma County Library. Call the church office at 823-2484 to sign up or for more information.
The Book Groups will not meet in the month of March. Instead, everyone is urged to attend the Tuesday evening Soup Suppers and hear the Faith Journeys presented by church members.
Rosemary Manchester, Coordinator for the Book Group, suggests that readers take advantage of the excellent selection of books available in the Church Library in the Fireside Room. You will find a wide variety of books: Fiction, Theology, Bible Study, Self Help, Church History, World Religions and more. Rosemary will post some suggestions in the Library. You may check out the books by filling out a card in the little green box.
The next meeting of the Book Groups will be in April, when we will join a county-wide project called "The Big Read." More about this in the March newsletter.
